Most books state that you should do this after 60,000 miles, however, it really depends on the vehicle and what it goes through. The same can be said of the transmission oil that the vehicle has. Most people will say to do this at 60,000 miles. However, many people only do this when they notice a change in the shifting or they notice that the oil is changing colors.
Overall, take the information that the mechanic gives you to heart about making the routine maintenance. However, you should also make sure that this is something that you feel should be done to the car. There is no point in changing the coolant and transmission oil each time that you have the car in for routine maintenance and any trustworthy mechanic is not going to suggest this each time since this is not being very straightforward with the driver.
