Scion was founded in 2002 by the Toyota motor corporation to produce cars for the North American market. In 1999 Toyota launched a project code named genesis to create a customer base of young buyers in the United States. This project was majorly concerned with the sales and marketing of the compact and coupe models produced by Toyota Corporation. This project saw the introduction of several cars including the Toyota Echo economy car, Toyota MR-@2 and Toyota Celica. The move was considered to be unsuccessful and the project was scrapped in 2001. It was replaced by another project called Project Exodus. This project later came to be known as Scion. In 2002 at the New York Auto Show, Toyota introduced two concept vehicles which were the pioneers of the Scion brand. These were the xB (previously the bbX) and the tC (formerly theccX). Up until 2004, Toyota was originally delivering cars only to California before they began distributing them to the south, Southeast and the East coast. The move to try and lure younger customers was necessitated by the average age of Toyota users which was at 54 years in 2007. That for scion is only 39 years old. Recently Toyota discovered that the average age of their customers was 54 years old. This was a slap to their faces since it indicated that a big portion of the buyers of Toyota vehicles were mostly members of the older generation.
This sparked a need to develop a marketing strategy and products that appeal to the younger population and provide them with a proper mileage system as well. It is this realization that led to the project that Toyota referred to as project Genesis. Its main aim was to market their cars to the younger generation of the United States citizens. The project started in 1999 and was considered to be a failure and consequently scrapped in 2001. It was soon replaced by another project which eventually became known as Scion. The scion was first sold in California in March 2002. Since then the company has sold an increasingly number of Scion cars.
The company’s sales eventually peaked in the year 2006 when 173,000 units were sold. However, sales have been on the decline since then.
