Monitoring Teen Drivers

by Auto Design on October 12, 2011

Many parents out there who have teen drivers are always on the look out for things that are going to give them peace of mind and allow them to still keep an eye on their teenager even though they are growing up and are venturing out on their own. After all, these kids are sixteen and seventeen years old, so though they are getting older, they still need some guidance. And when it comes time for that child to go off and start driving, most parents are fearing the worse. Every parent out there has sat up at night and wondered if the child was okay, yet did not want to bother them by calling their cell phone and so forth since the teen may think that the parent does not trust them or does not believe in them. With that being said, as parents they still are needing to protect their teen, which is why there are tons of new gadgets on the market that are meant to monitor the teen while they are driving.

There are those that are going to state that these monitoring devices are invasion of the teens privacy and so forth. And yes, the teen may get upset that you are monitoring them. However, if the parent points out that it is an option of be monitored or simply go no where, most teens give in and let themselves be monitored. The good news is that the majority of teens that know that they are being monitored are going to drive much better since they know that their parents will find out any mistakes that they make.

So just what are these gadgets? Some of the cars that are on the market are already coming out with these gadgets already installed and ready to go. The first that comes to mind is the Ford MyKey program. This program is meant to remind the teen to buckle up, controls the volume of the radio so that they are not distracted by this, and it also make sure that the car does not go over eighty miles per hour, while sending warnings to parents when the teen hits 55, 65 and so forth miles per hour while driving. This can come on any of the Ford vehicles, so parents do have a choice in which they car or truck that they buy.

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata is taking the monitoring level up a notch with their software that will allow the parent to see where the teen is driving, while also putting speed limits on the car, as well as curfew as to when the car can be used. However, for those that do not have either one of these vehicles, they are going to find that there are software that they can get to go on their existing car. There are GPS trackers, monitors that will who the hard brakes, acceleration and other driving ways that may signal a problem with teens.

As a parent, they worry about their teen. However, these devices can help to put some of that worry off to the side for the time being and be something that helps them to loosen those apron strings just a bit.
