Before 1994, Mercedes-Benz used an alphanumeric naming style for its cars. Generally the letters of the alphabet denoted the unique characteristic of the car. Examples are: a name containing alphabetic letter “R” in it denotes that it is a racing car and those containing letter “D” indicates that the car has a diesel engine. After 1994, Mercedes-Benz changed this system of naming and developed one based on classes consisting of one or several letters of the alphabet followed by numeric characters. The numeric characters in all models are usually an indication of specific characteristics including: engine displacement in liters and engine size. Sometimes the numeric part of the name has nothing to do with motor displacement and engine size; they are indications of relative performance, position in the respective class or sometimes may even be named in honor of previous models.
A good example is recent AMG models that have a “63” in the name in honor of a popular 1960s model. Mercedes-Benz has in its many years of producing high quality automobiles been a first time inventor of much technological advancement that is to date still in use. Some popular ones include: the honeycomb radiator, traction control systems, airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, electronic stability control and many more. Mercedes has been popular for decades for their investment in safety features which serve as big selling points for them to date.
