Driving Tips for Winter

by Auto Design on October 13, 2011

The winter season is getting closer and closer, and that means that people should be preparing for their drive in the snow and slippery conditions that make most people dread driving during the winter time. With that being said, there are a few things that the person should double check even before they head out onto the roads, and that is the fact that they have windshield wipers that are in good condition, a defrost that is working, antifreeze that is ready to take on the freezing temperature, and that their tires are in good shape as well. With that being said, there are a few other things that the person is going to want to keep in mind to ensure that their trip on the icy roadways is not one that is going to cause problems.

First off, carry chains. You never know when you may need them and you will want to make sure that they are the right size for your tires in order to get the best traction. Do keep in mind that some roadways do not allow chains to be used on them, however, these roadways are usually those that get cleared out first. And the person also needs to remember that you cannot go to fast with these chains on since they can fly off and end up hurting another vehicle or so forth.

Secondly, leave for your destination earlier if you have to get there at a certain time. You will find that when it gets icy and there is snow storms that traffic is more slow moving. And this brings up another point, when you are driving in such conditions realize that the speed limit is not really what you should be doing. The speed limits are set during dry weather and in the best of conditions. So slow down and allow yourself the extra time that you are going to need in order to get there and back safely.

Another good tip is to make sure that you have a full tank of gas. You are going to find that when the roads are slippery and snow storms are hitting, many times you cannot take a route that you used to take. Thus, you may find yourself having to take detours and this may mean that you may not run across a gas station for quite a few miles. When this happens you will be glad that you stopped and filled up in order to avoid running out of gas and being stranded on the side of the road.

And always remember to carry an emergency kit without. You will find that the emergency kit could literally save you from a horrible headache if you do become stranded on the side of the road during the winter days. And in the emergency kit, be sure that you pack warm blankets for everyone and food, just in case you are stuck there longer than you would have originally thought. And those that are with you will be happy that you did take the time to pack such a kit for a situation like this.
